WESLACO- Miguel Wise took the oath of office for the position of Mayor of Weslaco on June 15 at Weslaco City Hall in front of the council and a large crowd of supporters.

"I am excited about taking over the office of mayor," Wise said. " I had the opportunity to work with the City of Weslaco as the State Representative and I was proud to be elected to represent them and I look forward to working hard."

After the sound of de la Rosa's last snap of the gavel to commence with the swearing in Mike Wise, a former State Legislator, approached the stage with loud applause and shook Buddy's hand with respect. Judge David Wise, the Wise's cousin, presided over the ceremony and opened up with remarks on the Mayor elect as a man knowing the business of politics and possess the qualities, traits and experience for the job.

Wise won in a landslide victory with 68.49 percent of the vote. Two hundred more voters showed up at the polls for the new mayor. Not since 1987 had an mayoral incumbent in Weslaco lose their bid for re-election.

"It's very humbling when you see such a large group of supporters that have put their trust in you to take the city to the next level," the former legislator said.

The new Mayor said he hopes to be a positive force in bringing unity to the city to have one voice, one heart and one mission.

This comes after a Miguel Wise took just 49 percent of the vote in the general election on May 8. Incumbent Buddy de la Rosa followed with 30 percent and local physician Dr. Andrew Levine taking 21 percent.

Wise needed 51 percent of the vote to win the general election outright. This forced a run-off election that was held on June 12.
