One hour before the swearing in of Mayor-elect Mike Wise the Weslaco City Council voted to enter negotiations with Allied Waste Service to explore amending their existing contract to pick up public waste. The council was met with three concerned residents and wanted to know if it made sense for the city residents and employees to give the waste management detail to Allied Waste Services. "I am concerned for the citizens of Weslaco," said Guadalupe Francese. "Your telling me Weslaco is going to give services to a provider who has 75 percent of the Valley on contract." Frances, 60-years-old said the director of sanitation is in the hospital and should have been given the courtesy to have attended the special meeting. Local resident Jeff Rivera who also took the podium during public comment said, "This issue was voted down before, Miguel Wise hasn't even been sworn in so why bring it up today." The deal would allow Allied Waste Management to take over residential waste management. Allied Waste now services twenty-eight existing communities in the Rio Grand Valley. Allied Waste Services RGV General Manager Jon Deicla said, "all they voted for today was to sit down and talk to us since we already have a current contract with the city." |
