WESLACO WORLDS’ MEET THE PANTHERS Q&A: DEBANHI GAMEZ, WESLACO HIGH JUNIOR

WESLACO — The Weslaco World caught up with Weslaco High Junior Debanhi Gamez of the Panther Corps marching band. Here is what she had to say about playing the flute with the band and about herself.
Q: What inspired you to join the band, and how long have you been a member
A: My grandmas inspired me to join band, I’ve been a member of band for six years.
Q: What instrument do you play, and what do you enjoy most about it?
A: I play the flute, and what I enjoy about it is when you get to play super high notes.
Q: Can you describe a memorable performance or competition you’ve been part of?
A: Placing top performance in area.
Q: What’s your favorite song or piece to play with the band, and why?
A: The fight chant when my brother won his bi-district and district championship games.
Q: How does being in the band help you grow as a musician and as a person?
A: It helps you to connect with other people in the band and being able to play with other people you learn to listen differently.
Q: What’s the best part about being a member of this band?
A: I started in middle school seeing myself being part of the Weslaco Panther Crops, and here I am going into year three as a Weslaco Panther Crops marching band member.
Q: How do you and your bandmates support each other during practices and performances?
A: We always motivate each other and help each other out, or fix little things we need to fix to make ourselves better.
Q: What’s one thing you’ve learned from your band director that has stuck with you?
A: Rain or shine Panther Crops always have practice.
Q: How do you handle the pressure before a big performance or competition?
A: I always give a little moment to myself and pray to God to be there with me through the whole show.
Q: If you could play any other instrument in the band, what would it be and why
A: I would wanna be a trumpet player because of how loud they can play and they are jazz instruments.
Q: Who are your musical influences or favorite musicians?
A: My uncle Peke, because he plays his trumpet at his house and he always thinks he’s better than me.
Q: Do you have any pre-performance rituals or good luck charms?
A: Before I start my performance I always looks up and say this is for you grandmas.
Q: What’s the funniest thing that has happened during a band rehearsal or performance?
A: When we all got in trouble for messing around during rehearsal.
Q: If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be?
A: I would want to perform in France.
Q: What goals do you have for your band experience this year?
A: My goal this year for this year is to go to State.
Q: How do you think being in the band will influence your future, whether in music or other areas?
A: I would say it helps you later on in the future to talk to more people cause in band you talk to everyone so in the future your not scared to talk to people.
Q: What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining the band?
A: I would say it’s really fun to join, you meet so many new people and you get to experience and have the best fun time when your in the marching band going to pigskin competitions.
Q: What are you most excited about for the upcoming band season?
A: I’m very excited for pigskin season.
