WESLACO — Mike Burgett and the East Wildcats took a ride to Brownsville Thursday for a showdown with the Porter Cowboys at Sams Memorial Stadium.

From the start of the game the Wildcats were able to capitalize with its ground and pound running game with the help of running back Gio Guerra and company.

Guerra ran for more than 150 yards and punched in four touchdowns for the Wildcats before the end of the first half. Two were big runs where Guerra showed off his jet speed and shiftiness blowing by the Cowboys defensive line. Two of his four touchdown runs were more than 50 yards out, and his last was a diving run to the right side with his arm stretched out long enough to cross the end zone to lift the Wildcats to a 28-0 lead.

The Wildcats (2-0) marched on to defeat the Cowboys 42-3 and continue its District championship title defense it brings from its 2019-2020 31-6A (9-4), (6-0) campaign.

Next up for the Wildcats is a visit with Brownsville Veterans Memorial (1-2), (0-1) on Nov. 20 at Bobby Lackey Stadium at home. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

The Cowboys had five false starts in the first half alone, and cost them penalty yards. The Wildcats were able to push the home team offensive unit off the field with quick three and outs nearly all game with its stingy defense.

And when the Cowboys attempted to air it out with the long pass Wildcats cornerback Jesse James was their to contest the pass with the help of his teammates.

James intercepted a lengthy pass that sailed into the Wildcats territory, and he ran it to the 25 yard line after he picked it off.

The Cowboys could not get its offense going as they called a quick timeout to try and stop the Wildcats momentum early in the game after the James interception.

Two plays later on a second and 10 Gio Guerra sweepted left and found a hole to run in his first big gain 68 yard touchdown to lift the Wildcats to its 14-0.

Geurra punched in the Wildcats first touchdown of the night from the two yard line in the first drive of the game.

Guerra would have success finding his holes to move the chains, and the Cowboys had now answer for the Wildcats running game.

And in the second half it would be the Avery Bowen show. Bowen, a Donna High transfer was last year’s starting quarterback at Donna.

Last night his showed he could move the ball passing, and proved he is a running threat after he took one to the house 46 yards out and punched in another one in from the goal line for East’s last score of the game.

To open its season the Wildcats hosted Brownsville Pace at home and defeated the Vikings 44-34.
